Settlement and development of the western United States has been concurrent with and made possible by
the development and conservation of its water resources. This would not have happened without the determination
and dedication of early pioneers, strong leaders, agencies and organizations, and innovative and risk-taking
legislators.

The unique history and culture of western water and the enormous benefits we continue to reap from water and
power development are taken for granted by most persons. As the West continues to grow in population and other
demands for water multiply, this already scarce resource is further challenged.

WATER for the WEST was incorporated in December 2001 with its mission: "to provide educational opportunities to
inform people about the history, culture, politics, and benefits of water and power development and conservation in
the West, and the role of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in such development."

I invite you to explore this site, find out about WATER for the WEST and read about and experience some of the
exciting education programs our grants have enabled. Also, you can find out how to apply for a future grant and
how you can support the efforts of WATER for the WEST.

Thank you for visiting us today.

Sincerely,
Glenn Johnson
President
